Are you moving to Texas from another State? Maybe you are moving to Texas from California, Florida, Illinois, Washington or New york? Are you trying to figure out how to register your car in Texas? Have you been to the registration office and been turned away for not having the right paperwork? Did you think you had the right paperwork? Are you about to pull your hair out because this whole dang Texas inspection and registration process make no sense?
If you answered yes, don’t worry you are not alone.
Let me fill you in on a little secret. Texans think a lot of themselves. We are dang proud to call ourselves Texans. So when you move here from out of state we make you work to be a Texan too! Just kidding (sort-of)
I have put together a step by step guide on how to register your vehicle in Texas so you too can start calling yourself a Texan!!
Step one: Call your insurance company and tell them you have moved. You will need to get your out of state insurance transferred over to Texas insurance. The reason for this is each state has different minimum coverage criteria. In order to get your car registered in Texas you will need to change your insurance to meet Texas criteria.
Step two: Take your brand new Texas insurance card over to the nearest Sticker Stop. Sticker Stop will accept proof of insurance on your mobile device. We do not need a printed copy, but we gladly take a printed copy also.
Step three (part a): submit your car for inspection. We will perform a safety inspection and an emissions inspection. For more details on these two tests please visit the Texas DPS website.
Step three (part b): If you pass your inspection we will issue you an inspection report as proof of passed inspection. If you’re car fails you will have 15 days from the day after your car was initially inspected to get the items fixed. Once the items are fixed bring your car back for a reinpsection. However, if it is taking you longer to get everything fixed up just give us a call and we will be happy to extend your time.
Side Note: You may be hearing a lot of talk about car inspection and registration on the news. That is because before March of 2015 Texas used to issue inspection stickers to cars that passed inspection. That has all just recently changed. Texas just implemented the Texas two step one sticker program. #onesticker. We now perform stickerless inspections. For more information on this new system please visit two Two step one sticker website
Step four: Take your inspection report down to your county tax assessors office and they will then issue you your very own Texas registration sticker.
Step five: apply the sticker to the lower left corner (drivers side) of your windshield.
Step six: You are finished! You may now call yourself a Texan!
I hope this helped you navigate the Texas car inspection and registration system. If you have any further questions feel free to call us and we will happy to answer any questions!
WELCOME TO TEXAS!! We sure hope you love it here as much as we do!
